Public Education and Information
This
CD-ROM is one of seven titles comprising the Emergency Planner's
Companion Series. Its primary audience are planners involved in
CSEPP, but will also be useful to others involved with implementing
public educational programs and issuing emergency warnings. It contains
a comprehensive review track, an executive overview track, and a
final exam. Review questions are found throughout the course.
Providing factual information to the public
in a timely and effective manner during an emergency involving chemical
agents will:
- help prevent casualties in emergencies
involving a chemical agent release,
- eliminate confusion on what media to use
to disseminate protective action instructions,
- provide for a coordinated response with
media outlets, ensuring that all persons at risk are informed
promptly when an emergency occurs,
- decrease response times by allowing prompt
confirmation of the threat from an accidental chemical agent release,
and
- help control rumors that could affect emergency
response and recovery efforts.
If the public is to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency
involving toxic chemical agents, people must be made aware of the
risk from chemical agents and the necessary protective actions well
before an emergency occurs. A carefully planned public education program
is needed to provide people potentially at risk with the knowledge
required to take life-saving actions. The
CD-ROM contains 8 units in the comprehensive review track including:
- Introduction and Objectives
- Basic Concepts
- Planning a Pre-Emergency Program
- Methods for Disseminating Information
- Effective Communication
- Disseminating the Warning
- The Joint Information Center (JIC)
- Evaluation in Exercise
